I bought this tote to use as a clinical bag. I'm in nursing school, and I seem to always have about 20 lbs of stuff that I must take with me everywhere. I had been using old bookbags and shopping totes, but it just wasn't working out or very comfortable. I decided to invest in quality and splurged on Vera Bradley.
First, the pattern of the fabric is beautiful. The problem with some of the Vera Bradley fabrics is that they are just too bright and flamboyant for my taste. I wanted something a litle more subtle and sophisticated; I wanted pretty and feminine, without getting too bright and fussy. The Imperial Toile fabric is perfect. The colors are a nice contrast between light and dark, with just a little pop of color with the pink trim. The actual toile is nice, too. I like the subtle asian theme instead of the traditional country-toile.
The bag is extremely well designed. There are 8 pockets on the inside, 2 of them plastic lined. The outside has 4 more pockets, which are somewhat bigger than the inside pockets. The inside pockets are a useful size. There are 4 smaller pockets, about 3" across and plenty big enough for a dozen pens, several granola bars, a big ole smartphone, or whatever. The larger inside pockets are perhaps 4 or 5" accross (there are 2 of them) and big enough for a bigger wallet, maybe a small paperback, or similar. I put a stethescope in one of those pockets. It sticks up from the pocket, but doesn't fall out. The two plastic lined pockets... eh, not sure what to do with those yet. Are you supposed to stick a bottle of water in those? What do the designers imagine I would need waterproof pockets for? I have no idea. I'm sure when I figure out what they had in mind it will make perfect sense, but right now I am at a loss. In any case, they are about the same size as the smaller pockets and I just put whatever seems handy in them. The outside pockets are much bigger. I can easily fit a full cosmetics case in an outside pocket.
Aside from the pockets, there are several great design features to this bag. First, the hard bottom. YAAAAAAY! This bag does not immediately fall over as soon as you set it down!!!!! It's extremely annoying to have your bag tip over every time you put it down and have everything spill out, and thank you thank you thank you for designing a bag that won't:D
Last on this review, the straps. Someone was thinking ahead. Most women, when they come into possession of a bag this size, have a tendency to carry more stuff with them because they have all this ROOM. I'm guilty of this, much to my husbands displeasure. The straps are sewn the length of the bag. This means that when you load your bag up with 25 lbs of stuff, one little row of stitches can't rip leaving you with one handle. Also, the part of the strap that actually rests on your shoulder is padded. How thoughtful! It's actually comfortable to carry.
Once again, I LOVE this tote. If they come out with this bag in more fabrics that I like, I will buy several more.
