(More customer reviews)As recently retired empty nesters, we expect to be doing more traveling than usual. We have owned and traveled with the same set of Samsonite luggage for more than 20 years. Except for one poorly sewn strap, it has held up extremely well and we really hadn't considered that we would ever need any replacements or additions. However, times change and my wife has become really tired of hand carrying the overnight bag through airports. She wanted a carry-on with wheels. The other primary reason is because we have stopped using our enormous wheeled hard side case because it has become too heavy, albeit rugged, and we will shift some of the load to the carry-on.
The ExB 21" has real appeal, even though it is more costly than most, thanks to its multiple inside and outside pockets, over-sized wheels and convenient handles. Incidentally, we opted for two wheels rather than four, since these larger wheels should, we think, be more convenient traversing bumps. Also, we don't always travel by air, so the multiple external handles should be very beneficial for loading/unloading into and out of the trunks of rental cars as well as overhead compartments of aircraft.
The telescoping handle is sturdy and rigid when extended and locks into place in both the extended and "closed" positions, which should prevent it from getting hung up on luggage conveyors in the instance that you should not be able to carry it on board. Other features we like are the larger than usual wheels with hard plastic surrounds and the extra protection at critical wear points. The case also includes a small "wet" bag, which may or may not be adequate for some.
We also considered the "ballistic nylon" construction a plus. Additionally, we really like the ability to expand the case by 2". We won't be able to take advantage of this feature when we travel by air, but it will be welcome when just traveling by car. Finally, we surmised that the zippers are of a better quality than, say, an American Tourister at 40% of the price. I should explain that we are normally "value" purchasers, but if you travel much, cheap luggage isn't the place to save money in our opinion.
All in all, this carry-on looked better suited to our needs than the others offered by Samsonite and it comes with a 10 year limited warranty.
