(More customer reviews)A number of years ago, a seasoned business traveler said to me in a DC airport, "Never buy expensive luggage; you'll either lose it or it will get ripped off." I believed him then, but I don't anymore.
I travel a lot (about 150 flights/year). Since then, I've had a countless string of generic-looking bags with broken wheels, zippers, and handles. Every time I would pick one up, it was a reminder of how I was cutting corners. Cheap luggage isn't worth what it costs to a frequent flier.
This Hartmann bag is remarkable. Its wheels, handles, and zippers have never stuck, and it has all the extra features (pockets, hooks, separate suit compartment, toothbrush kit, laundry bag, and so forth) that are more valuable than I would have initially imagined. On top of this Gold Medal functionality, it looks really sharp. Every time I pick it up or even see it -- whether taking it from an overhead storage bin, zipping it open in a hotel, or sliding it back in my closet at home -- it makes me smile.
As for it being lost or ripped off as my fellow DC traveler had warned, knock on wood. I've had over 500 trips with an incredible previously purchased Hartmann Briefcase with no rip-offs yet. With this piece, Hartmann's Global Recovery System should help me reconnect with this newer bag if the unexpected happens. Yet even it vanishes, it will have been worth it while it lasted. I'll order another within a week. [Fellow travelers have told me the tweed is a great deal too. It covers up dirt and costs less.]
