This bag is not too heavy and I like the side straps that allow you to adjust to how full the bag is loaded. I own a Swiss Gear laptop backpack and it has lots of padding but weighs a ton empty. This bag is very lightweight which is what I was looking for. The shoulder straps have some padding. The bag is a good size and I can fit a lot inside. Have not used it for a long trip yet, but I have high hopes that it will work our great. It seems like a good value for the price. The shipping costs were very reasonable, but it takes a long time to arrive so don't order at the last minute.
