(More customer reviews)This bag is made of sturdy material that might be nylon canvas or something like it. I hesitated a long time before purchasing, but I had to get a big fancy dress to my college roommate's wedding, and had already spent more than I could afford on the whole trip.
This accommodated a floor-length gown (I'm 5'2"), a suit, and a couple of dress shirts in the main compartment with no wrinkles or damage even though the full skirt bunched at the bottom. The two side pockets are large and no fuss, and served in place of a regular carry on. They both face up as it hangs, so as you carry or hold it one faces up and the other faces down.
It wasn't much fun, but it worked. Security didn't bat an eye, and they didn't make me gate check it even on the 40-seat plane. My tiny dress shoes, tights, makeup, iPad, snacks, Rx, and water bottle fit just fine: and a good thing, too! Our checked luggage was delayed even longer than we were, so we only had wedding garb and the clothes we flew in!
I'd buy it again, and should probably rate it more highly, but if you're small and not very strong it's a real challenge to carry. The boyfriend claimed it was a cinch, but I can't guess how much of that is machismo. It folds loosely in half and has two short carrying straps, but unless you're a full foot taller or don't mind dragging it on the ground, you'll tend to carry it by the hanger. Before taking it on another trip I hope to have it fitted with a shoulder strap to make things easier. I'm grateful that it did its job flawlessly, but I don't cherish the memories I have of lugging it around.
Though the top of this is somewhat open, a light rain didn't get through. I would have used more caution with something silk, however.
Back to hangers: if you do use this, ignore everyone's advice to use cheap wire hangers to save space, and steer clear of those flat, sharp travel hangers. The flat hangers cut into the thick, protective rubber seals they like to call a hanger lock, and any thin hanger will cut into your hands. Unless you wrap your hangers, do yourself a favor and use plastic ones with a wide, comfortable hook!
