I thought it was a very cute bag, sort of a cross between carry on luggage and a duffle bag. I loved the gorgeous deep red color and it felt very durable. To be honest I thought I paid too much for the bag...it is after all a duffel on wheels.
When I got home I researched the bag and could not believe my eyes when I found out this retails for $150! That seems a little too much for a Jansport bag. Do the features justify the price?
Pros:
Apparently this is made from some kind of ballistic material. The tags on the bag stated that the bag is resistant to abrasions. I thought that was a neat idea. I've had brand new Samsonite luggage checked in at the airport before and by the time it arrived in baggage claim my luggage was frayed around the edges and had permanent black scuff marks all over them. Is this enough to justify the price tag?
Lifetime warranty - that's always good. I've had many Jansport products through the years and have never had to utilize the warranty on any of them. This bag is no exception and is very solid and well made.
Sort of has the best of both worlds. Classy yet casual. Versatile enough to use for camping trips or as luggage for airplane/business travel.
Cons:
The 20" bag is not that big. It's about the size and shape of a gym bag. The retractable handle and frame of bag actually takes away from space inside the bag...decreasing its depth. In addition the dome shape of the bag also cuts down the amount of storage space you have. You are left with a very shallow bag with most of the storage area confined to the middle of the bag where the highest point is. At most it can carry some things for an overnight or weekend trip.
There is a very small outer pocket that really isn't good for holding much.
There isn't a dedicated way to put a lock on the bag. You could put one around the nylon zipper pulls or try to lock two zipper tabs together through the holes but it was not something Jansport included in the design. Now I definitely know that Jansport did not intend for this to be luggage.
Conclusion:
This bag would get a much higher rating if #1. The price was lower #2. It performed really well as either a duffel (convertible to backpack for example) / carry on luggage (more storage and maybe expandable compartment) or #3. Jansport does a better job at explaining why it is priced as high as name brand luggage.
The over $100 price tag is unjustified. Since the bag is about the size of a small carry on/overnight bag, you have to wonder what possible situation might you be in that actually requires anything stronger than your regular luggage material. What you're actually getting from this bag is explained in a very short and vague hangtag that comes attached to the zipper of the bag. It doesn't state anything significant or worth mentioning other than the ballistic nylon thing.
Having paid $50, I feel that my price was "fair". (I bought it because it was unusually small and cute for a duffel on wheels.) If you are looking to use this as carry on luggage, you might want to consider spending that $100+ on real luggage.
*fyi There is a similar review from someone who purchased the 29" version of this bag and he had similar complaints about the storage area of the bag.
