(More customer reviews)I bought a black Coversafe "waist wallet" from Pacsafe for my first trip to Europe back in 2003. I've used it on other vacations since then, and despite some issues I consider it to be a good investment for protecting my larger bills, credit/debit cards, and critical travel documents while on the road.
A couple of features attracted me to the Coversafe waist wallet vs. comparable brands. First, the "slash-proof" anti-theft belt strap provides an extra layer of security and a more solid feel compared to the thin elastic band on other waist wallets. Second, the Coversafe's belt clasp is relatively sturdy and closes with a satisfying click, unlike the delicate clasps on brands like Eagle Creek and Rick Steves (with little effort I can pull the clasp apart on an Eagle Creek Undercover Deluxe Security Belt). Third, the small waterproof zip-lock bag inside the top pocket is a useful addition. It does a fine job of protecting my credit cards and small but valuable bits of paper (like a combination tag for a new lock) from moisture. Finally, my passport, airline ticket, and Eurail Selectpass all fit nicely into the two main compartments.
However, over time I've found some flaws with the Coversafe waist wallet. On at least one occasion the waistband's wire set off a TSA agent's metal detector wand, so I had to remove the belt for inspection - a bit inconvenient. In addition, the round clasp opens when you push down on it. That means the clasp can pop open from unintentional external pressure, such as bumping into something or bending too far at the waist. Also, the inner lining on my waist wallet's upper pocket has developed a two-inch tear along the top seam.
Despite these issues, I've ordered a new tan Coversafe waist wallet for my trip to Europe next month (along with a Pacsafe Pouchsafe neck pouch to try out, just to see which one I like better - see link below). Indeed, a waist wallet or neck pouch is a necessary travel accessory - a regular wallet or purse is too vulnerable to theft or loss (as I discovered in Paris). For my money, the Coversafe is the most functional waist wallet that I've seen.
