I wanted to love this wallet. First of all, this is quite an attractive accessory; the burnished leather in dark mahogany is gorgeous, and the stitching is a subtle accent that adds another touch of class. I love having my ID on the outside, both because I think it looks interesting and is easier to show to bouncers at bars (though I typically have to take my ID out anyway). The slots for ID and cards hold everything very securely, but not so securely that things are too difficult to remove. Of course, this is a brand new wallet, so I would expect some loosening of the leather with use/time. The build quality is good enough, though, that I would expect the wallet to hold up for a long time.
The money clip is obviously a matter of personal preference. I don't carry around too much cash, so I figured a money clip would be a great way to reduce wallet thickness because it eliminates the need for the money fold... I was wrong. It sticks out quite a bit due to its curve, which is attractive looking, but protrudes unnecessarily - I'll try to post a picture. I should say, though, that whether you have one bill or fifteen, they won't go anywhere unless you want them to. I've traditionally been a rear-pocket guy, and the money clip also typically forces a move to the front pocket. I don't really like adding more stuff to my key and phone-filled front pockets, but it really is difficult to sit on this thing given the way the clip sticks out. Since I knew these effects were the nature of the beast, I don't penalize the wallet for the shortcomings of the clip.
There was just one fatal flaw that I think will be a deal breaker for me. In addition to the ID slot in the front, there are six other slots - two traditional front-facing slots and one side-entry underneath on each side. I only carry debit card, credit card, ID, and Metro pass, so I don't need as many slots as larger wallets offer. I really wanted a THIN wallet, and I thought this was the one. Filled with cards, however, the wallet just doesn't close all the way; instead, the cards touch near the fold and prevent full closing. I'll try to post a picture of this, too. It's like the wallet should have been just a millimeter longer. It LOOKS like there IS enough material there, but being so new, it is just too stiff to bend easily. I wouldn't worry about it in a back pocket, since it would stretch quickly from sitting on it, but I'm not a gambling man. If it turns out that it stretches with time (if I decide to keep it), I will adjust the review accordingly.
If you desperately need a new wallet and prefer to have a money clip, this is a beautiful wallet and a solid choice. However, since I just wanted to "upgrade," to me this probably fails to offer a sufficiently compelling case for preventing its return to the store.
I should also mention that, since the online (everywhere) discount in this particular case is a few dollars, it's probably worth going to an actual J&M store to handle it and make sure that it closes to the thinness you require instead of ordering online only to find out that it wasn't what you were looking for. Normally I take that risk, but decided against it here, and I'm glad I did.
