I'm a big fan of Eagle Creek, and once again, they haven't disappointed. This time I was looking for an under-seat tote that could hold all the carry on things I want to use on board (or that need special handling)- this includes room for a computer, a camera, crocheting, books to read, food for the trip ... and then some. My non-negotiable requirements:
* it *must* fit under the seat. Despite what some luggage salesmen will tell you, 8.5" is about as high as you want to go. Some airlines have a bit more space, but 8.5 is safe on all but those tiny commuter planes.
* it should be able to roll down the aisle comfortably, so I don't have to carry it to my seat.
* it has to have wheels (though I usually do carry on & can slip a tote over the handles, sometimes I have to check my bags)
* it has to have good construction (the life-time warrantee is also nice)
* it has to have a slip panel to slide over the handle of my bigger luggage
* the wheels should be against the sides of the bag to minimize tipping over when going up & down stairs & curbs
More pluses for this bag:
* a netbook in a padded sleeve will fit comfortably in the front zippered pocket making it easy to pull out & stuff back in before & after security clearance without holding up the line for hours. Note: a 15" laptop will not fit.
* Eagle Creek designers are great at having just the right packing spaces to make the best use of a bag. There is a zippered inner pocket that can be used for valuables or medication you don't want falling out of the bag during the trip and the side pockets will be great for smaller things like earphones & ipod & glasses. The big inner space hasn't been divided so bulky things like crocheting will fit easily.
* this bag was one of the cheapest I looked at
I looked at a number of other bags that came close. Most failed because they were too deep, some failed for construction (handles that stick or cheap material) and one for not having wheels flush on the sides. I would have continued using what I've been using (too heavy, no wheels) before buying a bag that didn't have everything I wanted. Didn't need to wait.
