I owned this bag when I lived in New York and used it every day for about 3 years until one side of the shoulder strap began separating from the bag. It was the perfect size and dimension for commuting to work with a book, magazine, small dig. camera, water bottle and extra sweater or scarf. It fit very well against my back, looked great with everything I wore (I had the olive green color) and the strap was pretty comfortable if not weighed down with overly heavy stuff. One downside--beside the strap eventually coming detached--is that there are very few pockets. I tend to prefer a clean, simple, minimal look and this bag certainly delivers on that front. But if you want to access your keys, wallet, phone, ipod, chapstick, mints, loose change, etc. quickly and easily without rummaging around in the one large zipper pocket, look elsewhere.
I recently bought this bag again (this time in black) almost 8 years after my first one to use as a bike-commuting bag here in L.A. The new version seems exactly the same except the plastic closure system has been changed. I definitely liked the old clasp much better as it was easier to quickly open and close w/ one hand without looking at it. The new one is very picky--it just feels weird and counter-intuitive--and I have to use both hands to snap it shut (I guess I just need practice.)
Overall, it's a very sturdy, minimal-looking, quality bag that is not so big that it makes you look like an over-loaded bike messenger or so small that it makes you look like you're wearing a purse or a tourist's passport satchel. I don't recommend using it to cart around a laptop (a netbook or ipad, maybe) but it will definitely fit all your daily urban essentials and look good doing it.
